What are Electronic Health Records (EHR)?

Electronic Health Records (EHR)

A digital record that provides comprehensive health information about patients. EHR systems are built to share information with other health care providers such as laboratories, specialists, medical imaging facilities, pharmacies, emergency facilities, and school and workplace clinics and they contain information from all clinicians involved in a patient’s care.

EHR can include:

  • Patient Demographics

  • Administrative and Billing Data

  • Progress Notes

  • Vital Signs

  • Medical Histories

  • Diagnoses

  • Medications

  • Immunization Records

  • Lab and Test Results

  • Radiology Images

  • Allergy Information

EHR is not to be confused with EMR (Electronic Medical Records), which are quite similar but less extensive. Click here for full definition of an EMR.
